South Africa has, without a doubt, amongst the most service orientated tourism industries on earth, and on the 22nd of October, at the Sandton Convention Centre, the crème de la crème of the hospitality sector was honoured.
First we had the Provincial Gala event, which for Limpopo, took place in Tzaneen to coincide with the opening of Tourism month. Here the best of each province were rewarded for their service excellence.
For each category the winners were determined based on a number of things. In the Guiding category, guests had to vote and comment on Michael and his game drives, after this he had to appear in front of a panel of judges for an interview and Q & A.
On the 24th of September Michael took Guide of the Year on Provincial level for Limpopo.
Now the pressure was on! He had a one out of 9 chance of winning it overall. He then had to go for another round of interviews, in front of another panel of judges at the Tourism office in Pretoria. This time he also had to have a presentation, on himself on what he does, prepared. Then the waiting started…
The National winners are selected from the short-list of Provincial winners for the ultimate accolade of tourism excellence.
The black-tie event was hosted by former Miss South Africa, now businesswoman Joanne Strauss and local musician Stoan Seate. The Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, congratulated all and commended everyone for their contribution to the growth of tourism in our country. He was then assisted by the hosts in the handing out of the awards.
Michael was announced as the winner for Best Nature Guide in South Africa.
We’ve always believed he’s the Best, but are thrilled that he was awarded this amazing accolade, and received the recognition for a passion that is evident everyday. We are proud to call him one of our own – Congratulations Michael!
