Unprecedented Rains and a Rare Reserve Closure: What This Means for Nedile Lodge
Welgevonden Game Reserve has always been a place of untamed beauty – where nature reigns supreme. But every so often, nature reminds us just how powerful it truly is. Over the past few months, exceptional rainfall has transformed the landscape in ways we haven’t seen in decades. And now, for only the third time in the reserve’s history, Welgevonden Game Reserve has been forced to close until March 21st due to severe road damage caused by the relentless downpours.
A Look Back: When Has This Happened Before?
To understand the magnitude of this closure, it’s worth looking back at history. The last time the reserve experienced a closure of this length was 25 years ago, in 2000, when Nedile Lodge was still under construction. That year, Welgevonden recorded a staggering 1212mm of rain, making roads completely impassable and halting operations for three weeks. In May 2014, the reserve faced another temporary closure, but at Nedile Lodge, we were fortunate – only one day passed where guest movement was completely restricted.
Fast forward to today, and since July 2024, we have already recorded 893mm of rainfall – with the rainy season still far from over. This has taken a toll on the reserve’s infrastructure, leading to the difficult decision to close all roads for the safety of guests, staff, and wildlife.
What Happens Next?
While this is undoubtedly a challenging time for both the reserve and all the lodges within it, efforts are already underway to begin repairs as soon as conditions allow. Welgevonden specialised roads team will work tirelessly to restore access, but patience is key – nature works on its own timeline.
A Silver Lining
Despite the difficulties, there is a long-term benefit to this rare weather event. The bushveld is undergoing a transformation – water sources are replenishing, vegetation is flourishing, and wildlife will thrive in the months ahead. When the reserve reopens, it will be more alive than ever, offering an unparalleled safari experience in a refreshed and revitalised landscape.
We’ll continue to share updates as the situation evolves, and we look forward to welcoming you back to a greener, wilder, and more breathtaking Nedile Lodge soon.
